RCCH at World Forum 2009
On Monday, June 14th, Anna Tardos, Director of the Pikler Institute in Budapest, Hungary, led a half day training on the Pikler approach. She will lead an introductory training that is used at the Institute and taught throughout the world. Participants also heard from Maria Vasquez, the founder of an orphanage in Ecuador, and Karen Gordon who is transforming some existing orphanages in Nicaragua and El Salvador. Both of these women implement the Pikler methodology.
"It is a well known fact that orphanages are an everyday reality for millions of abandoned, neglected, and abused children worldwide. Living in such conditions can endanger the physical and mental health of children. There are very few institutionalized children who have been able to receive adequate conditions needed for good care and a secure relationship with an adult.
In 1946, after World War II, Dr. Emmi Pikler, a Hungarian paediatrician, used her expertise to provide a quality environment for children in a Hungarian orphanage. The living conditions that she created for these children allowed for their social and physical development similar to those children who are raised in their own home. The Pikler approach puts the individual needs of the child at the forefront of his/her education. This simple and natural approach, needs a thorough training for the people who use it, but it gives wonderful results. Please join us and learn more about how to implement this approach in institutions or group settings."
