Working Forum for Teacher Educators

Auckland, New Zealand
April 30 - May 2, 2008

College instructors, independent trainers, and trainers in private and public organizations from six continents gathered in Auckland for an intense three days of idea sharing and brainstorming on issues and strategies in training the early childhood workforce worldwide. There were several unique aspects that contributed to the value of the event...

  • The format of the event made for in depth, connected conversations. Plenary presentations on the following topics were followed by small group discussions. Each of the discussion groups remained the same for the entire Forum so that conversations and professional connections deepened (see Agenda link below for full program description)

    • Conversations on teacher education for advocacy and leadership.
    • Conversations on teacher education in bicultural and multicultural contexts.
    • Conversations on teacher education and relationships.
    • Conversations on teacher education and adult learning strategies
    • Conversations on teacher education and curriculum.
    • Conversations on teacher education and the role of technology in program delivery.
    • Conversations on future directions for early childhood teacher education.

  • The outcome of this Working Forum will be a book on early childhood teacher education. This book, being edited by Colin Gibbs and Andrew Gibbons, will include the formal presentations as well as the ideas and stories generated in the discussion groups. Our goal is to launch this book at the 2009 World Forum.

The World Forum Foundation, with the input of all the Working Forum attendees, is currently evaluating next steps to take in addressing teacher education. One certainty is that the 2009 World Forum will feature important teacher education sessions based on issues raised in Auckland. Other developments will be announced in future issues of ExchangeEveryDay.
